The solar electric industry is the fastest-growing sector for any job seeker in America right now, an August 2026 report finds. With the labor market shifting rapidly across tech, energy, and healthcare, this latest study by software talent marketplace Lemon.io reveals the top 10 industries with the best career outlook.
-
No US industry is growing faster than solar power, which nearly doubled its workforce in just two years.
-
Wind energy is growing nearly 10 times faster than the broader job market, with turbine technician and engineer roles projected to expand 82%.
-
The elderly and disability services sector is on track to hire over 500K new workers in the coming years.
The research examined up to 40 US industries to find which ones offer job seekers the strongest career prospects right now. It measured how fast each industry hired over a two-year period, how many new positions are expected to be created by 2034, and how quickly employment is projected to grow over that same window. The study also looked at annual wages and compared them against the national US median. These figures were combined into a single Career Outlook Score, revealing which industries offer more job opportunities and salaries.
Here's a look at the top 10 industries with the strongest career outlook:

Solar power is the best industry to get into right now. The sector added workers at nearly 79% over just two years, and what's coming next is even more appealing for job seekers. Employment is projected to grow another 179% over the following decade, meaning the number of jobs is on track to nearly triple to 47.2K by 2034. Roles like solar installer and power generation technician also pay well, with a median wage of $77.5K, about 57% more than the typical American worker takes home.
2. Computer Systems Design
Computer systems design ranks second among the growing industries. The sector already employs nearly 2.5 million people, and it's set to add another 387K jobs by 2034, more than almost any other industry in America. Salary levels clearly indicate how much companies need these workers, with a median wage of nearly $110K per year. Software developers, information security analysts, and systems analysts make up the biggest part of those in demand here.
3. Software Publishing
Software publishing takes third place, paying one of the highest salaries in America right now. Workers in the sector earn $131K a year on average, more than double the US average. Around 124.5K new jobs are expected across the industry by 2034, covering roles like software developer, product manager, and quality assurance analyst. Hiring held steady over the past two years, with modest growth of just over 2%, but the next wave is likely to be much bigger.
4. Wind Electric Power Generation
Wind energy ranks fourth, growing at a pace second only to solar. Employment climbed 35% over the past two years, and the sector is projected to expand another 82% by 2034, when it's expected to employ around 20.4K workers. Pay is solid too, with a median annual wage of $80K, roughly 62% above the national average. The workforce is still relatively small today, so the growth rate translates into one of the fastest expansions in the US job market.
5. Scientific Research and Development
Scientific R&D rounds out the top five. Workers here earn a median of $127K per year, nearly 157% above the national benchmark. Around 75.8K new jobs are expected across the sector by 2034, spanning roles from research scientist to chemical engineer.
A senior talent sourcer from Lemon.io commented on the findings:
"The healthcare hiring numbers aren't surprising when you look at the demographic picture. The number of people aged 60 and over is expected to grow from 1.1 billion to 1.4 billion by 2030. That's a massive increase in the population that needs regular medical care, assisted living, and home health support. The challenge is that the workforce isn't growing fast enough to keep up with that demand, but that also presents an opportunity for those who want to enter the elderly care sector."
